New Delhi: Following the imposition of a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods by Washington due to New Delhi’s acquisition of Russian oil, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington. As per the U.S. State Department’s public agenda, their discussions will take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. This meeting will mark the third in-person encounter between Jaishankar and Rubio in 2025. Their first meeting occurred in January during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Washington, shortly after Rubio assumed office, and they met again in July at a subsequent Quad gathering.
This meeting aligns with ongoing trade negotiations between India and the U.S. in Washington, where Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is representing India. Talks have resumed following President Donald Trump’s more conciliatory approach, stating that his administration continues efforts to address trade barriers with New Delhi.
