The Delhi government has approved a significant restructuring of the city’s administrative framework, increasing the number of districts from 11 to 13. This includes the establishment of two new districts, alongside a revision of the boundaries and names of several existing districts. The current districts include New Delhi, Central Delhi, West Delhi, East Delhi, North Delhi, South Delhi, North-West Delhi, North-East Delhi, South-West Delhi, South-East Delhi, and Shahdara. Officials stated that this change aims to enhance administrative efficiency, improve departmental coordination, and ensure faster resolution of public grievances. The government believes that smaller districts will facilitate quicker service delivery and enhance accountability. For years, overlapping departmental boundaries have led to delays and confusion.

Once the new districts and their boundaries are confirmed, citizens will have the ability to directly approach the District Magistrate with their complaints for more efficient resolutions. Additionally, District Magistrates will be granted powers akin to those of their counterparts in other states. Key departments, including the Delhi Jal Board, PWD, and Social Welfare, will assign nodal officers at the DM offices, consolidating various services in one location.
