Google is replacing Google Assistant with its latest AI, Google Gemini, for smart home use. Users will still initiate commands with “Hey Google,” but responses will now come from Gemini. This AI is capable of understanding natural dialogue and executing intricate requests. For instance, you can instruct it to “Turn off the lights, close the shades, and play music at 9 pm,” and it will handle all tasks automatically. The Google Home app has undergone a redesign, now featuring three primary sections: Home (for devices), Activity (to view past actions), and Automation (for routine management). New functions like “Ask Home” allow users to check on activities during their absence or receive a daily “Home Brief” update.
Additionally, Google announced new Gemini-powered Nest cameras, including the Nest Cam Indoor 2K priced at $100, the Nest Cam Outdoor 2K at $150, and the Nest Doorbell 2K at $180. These devices offer enhanced 2K resolution and leverage AI to provide more specific alerts, such as indicating that a package was delivered by FedEx instead of simply stating “Person detected.” Walmart is also set to offer budget-friendly Onn cameras compatible with the Google Home app. In terms of audio, Google has unveiled a new smart speaker, Gemini, priced at $100, which will be available in spring 2026.
This speaker features 360-degree sound, a modern design, various color options, and the ability to pair with other Nest speakers for enhanced audio experiences. It also includes a light strip indicating when Gemini is active and a mute button for privacy. Some advanced features will require a subscription, with Google Home Premium starting at $10 per month, providing access to Gemini Live for full conversations, improved automations, and extended camera video history. With these advancements, Google aims for Gemini to evolve beyond a voice assistant, positioning it as a comprehensive AI helper for the home, enhancing connectivity and convenience.
