Mohammed Shami Discusses His ODI Omission and Captaincy Changes

Mohammed Shami has not participated in international cricket for an extended time. Currently, he is playing for Bengal in the IPL and domestic competitions but was not selected for the upcoming ODIs against Australia starting on October 19. In a recent interview, Shami addressed the situation, stating, “There have been many memes and rumors regarding my absence from the India vs Australia cricket series in 2025. I want to clarify that selection is not entirely in my hands. The selection committee, coach, and captain also play a role. If they believe I am ready, they will include me. If they decide otherwise, that is their choice. I am completely fit and train daily,” he remarked on his YouTube channel.

Shami emphasized, “My fitness is not an issue. I am focused on improving because staying motivated is crucial when you’re away from the game. I played in the Duleep Trophy, felt good, and bowled 35 overs. I had my rhythm, so fitness is not a concern.” Regarding the captaincy debate, Shami was asked about the ODI captaincy transition from Rohit Sharma to Shubman Gill. He stated, “There has been a lot of discussion about this. I have no objections. The controversy related to the ODI squad involves the BCCI, selectors, and coaches. Shubman has previously captained India in England and leads the Gujarat Titans, so he has the experience.

He needs to embrace the responsibility, and I see no problem with it. The BCCI has made its decision, and we must respect that.” He added, “Captaincy shouldn’t be a major concern for us. It’s beyond our control. It won’t matter much; one person leads today, and another will lead tomorrow. This is always going to happen.”
