India's Rise as a Global Leader in Textiles and Fashion

Mumbai: Through significant initiatives like the PM MITRA Parks, the National Technical Textiles Mission, and an emphasis on sustainability and global competitiveness, India is rapidly becoming a leader in textiles and fashion, according to Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita. The minister noted that the fashion industry is currently undergoing a transformation, shifting from commercial success to conscious creation. The focus is now on sustainability, ethical fashion, and slow design. There is a renewed appreciation for India’s textile heritage, which includes natural dyeing, hand weaving, recycling, and zero-waste tailoring.

The combination of traditional skills with global influences is making Indian design one of the most dynamic in the world today, he stated at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Mumbai. NIFT Mumbai has recently opened new academic buildings, showcasing its commitment to superior infrastructure and advanced learning environments, thus enhancing its reputation as a top fashion institute in India. The minister also unveiled a plaque for the new academic block and observed demonstrations of technical textiles alongside curated student displays. His attendance highlighted the government’s dedication to fostering future leaders in design and innovation. He commented, “This culture of innovation and creativity is nurtured daily at NIFT Mumbai and NIFT Daman.

With cutting-edge facilities, experienced faculty, and an engaged student body, both campuses are among the most esteemed design institutions in the nation.” The convocation ceremony celebrated the graduation of 312 students from NIFT Mumbai and 29 from NIFT Daman, recognizing their achievements and creativity. This significant event reinforces NIFT Mumbai’s commitment to providing students with exceptional education and progressive resources.
