Michelin is excited to announce the introduction of the MICHELIN Guide in Aotearoa New Zealand, marking its inaugural expansion into Oceania. The first edition will highlight four dynamic culinary hotspots: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown. Set to be launched in mid-2026, the selection of restaurants is already in progress, with MICHELIN Guide Inspectors currently dining anonymously to pinpoint the finest establishments that reflect the unique culinary scenes of these cities. Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide, expressed enthusiasm about this expansion, noting New Zealand’s rich and diverse culinary landscape influenced by its Māori heritage, Pacific flavors, and a new generation of chefs dedicated to local ingredients with creativity and passion.
This initiative aims to showcase the exceptional restaurants in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown, highlighting the unique flavors and talent that position New Zealand as an exciting gastronomic destination. The MICHELIN Guide’s expansion into New Zealand is supported by Tourism New Zealand. Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Louise Upston remarked that this acknowledgment is not only a victory for chefs and winemakers but also a success for the entire hospitality and tourism sector, celebrating the commitment and skill of those who enhance New Zealand’s food and beverage experiences.
René de Monchy, Chief Executive of Tourism New Zealand, stated pride in their vibrant food scene, noting that the recognition elevates New Zealand’s culinary excellence on the international stage and invites global travelers to savor its unique flavors and stories. Aotearoa New Zealand’s cuisine is a blend of cultures, enriched by contemporary influences and local produce, from seasonal vegetables to renowned grass-fed meats. Auckland’s dining scene combines local cuisine with diverse international offerings, creating a culinary hotspot. Wellington, known as New Zealand’s creative capital, boasts a multicultural culinary scene committed to organic and sustainable practices, while Christchurch leverages the region’s natural resources for farm-to-table experiences.
Queenstown, nestled in the Southern Alps, presents a culinary landscape that balances natural abundance with eco-conscious innovation. Each dining experience in Aotearoa New Zealand invites visitors to connect with the land and culture, transforming meals into authentic experiences. The introduction of the MICHELIN Guide places New Zealand firmly on the global culinary map and recognizes the excellence of its chefs, producers, and hospitality. This spotlight encourages tourism and promotes local talent while deepening international appreciation for its distinct flavors. The MICHELIN Guide, created in 1900, continues to redefine excellence, now focusing on hospitality as well. The announcement follows the recent recognition of 19 New Zealand hotels in the 2025 MICHELIN Global Keys for excellence in design and service.
The MICHELIN Guide employs a rigorous selection process, evaluating restaurants based on five universal criteria: quality of ingredients, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavors, personality of cuisine, and consistency over time. The MICHELIN Guide is dedicated to upholding the highest standards in its selection process, utilizing anonymous, expert inspectors to ensure impartial evaluations that prioritize culinary excellence. The guide awards distinctions, including the prestigious MICHELIN Stars for top culinary experiences, with one star for high-quality cooking, two for excellent cooking worth a detour, and three for exceptional cuisine deserving a special journey. Additionally, the Bib Gourmand category recognizes restaurants offering good quality food at moderate prices.
The MICHELIN Guide’s commitment to impartiality ensures that only the finest dining establishments receive recognition.
