Bhubaneswar: Following a recent deadly explosion in Delhi that resulted in over eight fatalities and numerous injuries, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday highlighted the necessity for stringent security measures for the upcoming India-South Africa T-20 International match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on December 9. Majhi issued these directives during a high-level preparatory meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan aimed at reviewing the arrangements for the T-20 International match. Citing the recent Delhi explosion, Majhi underscored the importance of robust security protocols and instructed the police to remain vigilant to guarantee public safety at all phases.
During the session, the Chief Minister also urged senior officials from the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) and the State administration to ensure seamless execution of all plans to conduct the event in an organized and dignified manner. “Cricket is among the most beloved sports in our nation, and this match will attract national and international attention. Hence, it must be executed smoothly, showcasing Odisha’s efficiency and honor,” the Chief Minister asserted. Majhi also directed officials to create a well-coordinated green corridor for the efficient movement of individuals needing medical assistance during emergencies. He emphasized the necessity for effective crowd management, ticket sales, and emergency healthcare services.
OCA secretary Sanjay Behera provided a comprehensive update on preparations, addressing matters such as ticket sales, crowd management, consistent lighting arrangements, stadium infrastructure, fire safety, parking amenities, and traffic control. Notably, the State faced embarrassment earlier this year when a floodlight malfunction at Barabati Stadium led to a 35-minute interruption during the second ODI between India and England in February. Consequently, the Odisha government had requested an explanation from the OCA regarding the floodlight issue. In light of this, the Chief Minister instructed officials to install additional generators and implement a new monitoring software system.
The meeting included Sports and Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Chief Minister’s Advisor Prakash Mishra, and Angul MLA and OCA member Pratap Chandra Pradhan. The Opposition BJD remarked that the Chief Minister had conducted a similar review prior to the India-England match, which experienced a power outage at the stadium, damaging the State’s reputation. They urged the government to exercise heightened caution regarding crowd management and ensure adequate security for the match.
