Delhi Chief Minister launches e-buses and testing station

New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday inaugurated 50 electric buses and laid the foundation stone for an automated vehicle testing station at Tehkhand, emphasizing her government’s commitment to addressing air pollution in Delhi. She stated that while solving the city’s challenges may take time, the government has a clear policy and strong intent to tackle each issue. Currently, Delhi has over 1.53 crore registered vehicles, with around 6.5 lakh commercial vehicles needing fitness tests annually. However, there is only one functional automated test center at Jhuljhuli, which tests only 47,919 vehicles per year. The Tehkhand depot will enhance this capacity, allowing for the testing of 73,000 vehicles annually, according to a statement from the Delhi CMO.

The chief minister highlighted that her administration has introduced 1,350 new e-buses in just eight months, marking significant progress compared to the 2,000 e-buses added over the previous 11 years. She noted that these initiatives will significantly improve Delhi’s environmental quality and transportation efficiency in the future. Gupta also mentioned that the new fitness test center at Tehkhand will be vital in reducing the city’s pollution levels, as commercial vehicles are major contributors to this issue. Additionally, she reported that work on another automated testing station at Nand Nagri is progressing quickly. Meanwhile, existing vehicle testing centers at Burari and Jhuljhuli are being upgraded to meet modern standards and technology.

Once upgraded, the capacity in Delhi will rise to one lakh vehicles per year, the statement added.
