Sonepur Fair Enhances Experience with Luxury Cottages for Couples

Patna: The renowned Harihar Kshetra Sonepur Fair has opened its doors once again in Bihar, attracting visitors and devotees from across India and beyond. Recognized as Asia’s largest cattle fair, this year it has undergone significant enhancements, with the state tourism department announcing expanded security and improved amenities for the month-long event. A notable addition is a tour package specifically designed for couples. Priced at Rs 6,000, this package includes hotel accommodation, air-conditioned travel, the assistance of a trained guide, and all meals — from breakfast to dinner. Close to the fairgrounds, a tourist village has been established that features modern Swiss-style luxury cottages.

The tents, which are inspired by royal aesthetics, are categorized as Mini Darbari and Rajwadi, and come equipped with air-conditioning, attached bathrooms, 24-hour electricity and water, and comprehensive security. Domestic tourists are charged Rs 3,000 per night, while international guests pay Rs 5,000. The Bihar Tourism Development Corporation has also organized dedicated luxury transport between Patna and Sonepur to facilitate travel for attendees. Officials report that these new facilities are generating significant international interest. Among the early visitors this year are 14 tourists from Japan and eight from Germany, along with various domestic travelers who have chosen to stay in the Swiss cottages.

The Sonepur Fair, held annually from Kartik Purnima at the confluence of the Ganga and Gandak rivers, is regarded as one of India’s oldest fairs. Throughout its month-long duration, millions of devotees flock to the sacred site to partake in ritual baths and join in what remains the subcontinent’s most prominent cattle fair.
