11 December 2025 | Rail ticket prices in India are the most affordable compared to neighboring and developed countries, according to Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He highlighted that the Indian Railways provided a subsidy of Rs 60,000 crore last year to keep ticket prices low.
Comparison with Developed Countries
During a session in the Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw responded to Congress member M K Vishnu Prasad’s query regarding the restoration of rail ticket discounts for senior citizens. He noted that ticket prices in India are only about five to ten percent of those in developed nations.
Subsidy to Ensure Affordability
Vaishnaw emphasized that the Indian Railways has made significant efforts to ensure that passenger transport remains affordable. He mentioned that the subsidy was crucial for maintaining low ticket prices, making train travel accessible for many citizens.
India’s Competitive Edge in Transportation
Vaishnaw stated, “Even compared to our neighboring countries, India is providing the most affordable transportation to our citizens or passengers.” This assertion underscores India’s commitment to ensuring cost-effective travel options for its population.
