Adobe has made a significant advancement in creative design by launching its new AI Assistant in Photoshop. Debuted at the company’s annual Adobe MAX 2025 event, this feature, named Prompt to Edit, enables users to perform sophisticated image edits by simply describing them in everyday language. Powered by Adobe Firefly Image Model 5, this conversational AI tool allows users to modify existing images without navigating through complex tools or layers. Users can enter prompts like “remove the background,” “soften the lighting,” or “add a reflection,” and the AI carries out the edits while preserving the image’s other elements.
Adobe clarified that Prompt to Edit operates similarly to a text-to-image generator; however, instead of creating new images, it enhances or modifies existing ones. For example, users can request, “brighten the sky and make it sunset orange,” and Photoshop will smartly adjust the lighting and color while keeping the original composition intact. Adobe aims to simplify creative workflows and make professional-level editing accessible to all, from designers and photographers to casual users. This initiative also mirrors Adobe’s increasing emphasis on agentic AI, a new class of tools aimed at enhancing creation and collaboration across its software suite. Alongside this Photoshop upgrade, Adobe previewed Project Moonlight, an upcoming conversational assistant that will function across Photoshop, Firefly, and other Adobe applications.
This AI companion will provide real-time creative suggestions, content insights, and workflow assistance, enabling users to generate and refine ideas more rapidly. The Firefly Image Model 5, which supports these new features, is available in public beta and can manage complex, multi-layered image compositions with improved photorealism. The model is capable of generating visuals in native 4MP resolution while maintaining consistent lighting, texture, and motion, crucial for high-end design projects. Adobe also announced new features for its Firefly creative AI studio, which now integrates image, video, and audio generation on a single platform. Among the recent tools are Generate Soundtrack, which produces fully licensed AI-generated music, and Generate Speech, which can create natural-sounding voiceovers in multiple languages.
Both tools are currently in public beta and can be synchronized with video editing projects. For video creators, Adobe introduced a timeline-based AI video editor, now in private beta, that combines traditional editing with generative features, enabling users to trim, arrange, and modify video clips via simple text commands. Another notable feature is Custom Models, enabling creators to train their own AI models based on specific styles or brand guidelines for consistent outputs across projects. Adobe announced collaborations with Google, OpenAI, ElevenLabs, and Topaz Labs to expand its AI ecosystem. Updates to Firefly Boards, an AI-powered ideation tool, include features like 3D rotation, preset generation, and bulk export for enhanced collaboration. Most of these innovations are being launched in phases.
The Prompt to Edit feature and Firefly Image Model 5 are already accessible, while the new video, audio, and custom model tools will begin rolling out to early-access users next month. With these developments, Adobe is bridging the gap between creativity and AI, making design more intuitive, quicker, and accessible than ever.
