Kolkata, May 20 (). Three African gray parrots were recovered by the police late on Friday night from the possession of Tarzan Circus officials in West Bengal’s Birbhum district.
A PETA India representative said the birds have been shifted to a secure and spacious aviary with the help of the state’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.
The PETA India representative said, children these days are becoming increasingly aware that the use of animals in circuses involves cruelty and are therefore opting for other forms of entertainment. If circus executives want to remain relevant, they will have to modernize and go animal-free, hiring only volunteer adult human performers.
They have been found to be constantly chained or confined in small, barren cages, except when animals are used for show, he said. Animals in circuses across the country are denied adequate veterinary care, food, water and shelter. Often punished and forced to perform feats. Many animals exhibit stereotypic and repetitive behavior that indicates extreme stress.
