Lok Sabha Speaker OM Birla has advocated for the responsible and ethical application of artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing its potential to empower citizens and enhance transparency in governance. While leading a workshop at the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference in Barbados, Birla underscored India’s advancements in utilizing AI to improve parliamentary operations. During his address on “Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Digital Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide,” he pointed out that collaboration and knowledge-sharing can transform technology into a facilitator rather than an obstacle. He urged Commonwealth nations to endorse the ethical use of AI while addressing the digital divide through technological means.
Birla noted that the implementation of e-Parliament has significantly revolutionized the functioning of India’s parliamentary democracy. He mentioned that AI-driven digital solutions are enhancing the effectiveness and inclusiveness of parliamentary processes. Tools like AI-based translation, an AI-supported e-Library, and speech-to-text reporting are contributing to this efficiency. He also discussed forthcoming initiatives, stating that real-time AI translation systems such as “Sansad Bhashini” will enable every member of Parliament to express themselves in their own language, marking a significant milestone for democracy in India’s diverse landscape. “Democracy thrives when citizens actively engage with their Parliament. Technology is crucial in fortifying this relationship,” Birla remarked.
He highlighted that the “Digital Sansad” initiative has created a cohesive digital ecosystem linking Parliament members, ministries, and citizens on a unified platform. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, India has established a cost-effective and open digital public infrastructure serving 1.4 billion citizens, revolutionizing governance and the economy. Birla emphasized that Modi’s visionary outlook regards AI not just as a technological innovation, but as a vital means for empowering citizens and ensuring transparent governance.
