Apple’s AirPods Max, their over-ear headphones, have not been updated since their release in December 2020. Although they enjoyed early success and maintain a loyal user base, reports indicate that the anticipated second-generation model, likely named AirPods Max 2, will not be released anytime soon. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has reported that Apple has put any updates for the AirPods Max on indefinite hold. The only modification to date occurred in September 2024, when Apple replaced the Lightning port with USB-C to meet European Union regulations. No major features or design changes have been introduced since their launch. In his Power On newsletter, Gurman highlighted the peculiar position of the AirPods Max within Apple’s product lineup.
They remain too popular to be discontinued, yet do not generate sufficient sales to warrant substantial investment in research and redesign. Gurman noted that while the headphones are “too popular for Apple to stop selling,” they lack the frequent updates enjoyed by the AirPods Pro and standard AirPods, putting them at a disadvantage. Other AirPods models have seen enhancements such as adaptive audio, advanced noise cancellation, longer battery life, and spatial audio, while the Max have remained largely unchanged. Upon their introduction, the AirPods Max garnered acclaim for their premium aluminum design, excellent audio quality, and seamless integration within the Apple ecosystem.
However, their steep price of $549 (₹59,900 in India) and bulky design limited their appeal to the mass market, with many users opting for the lighter and more affordable AirPods Pro. Consequently, Apple has directed its efforts towards annual updates for the Pro models, which cater to a wider audience, leaving the Max with minimal attention. Interestingly, as the AirPods Max await an upgrade, Apple’s Beats line has undergone consistent updates. New Beats headphones and earbuds now include USB-C charging, improved sound quality, and modern connectivity features, all at more competitive prices.
Additionally, competitors like Sony, Bose, and Sonos have released next-generation headphones that boast superior noise cancellation, sleeker designs, and extended battery life, posing a challenge to the AirPods Max’s standing in the premium audio market. Currently, the AirPods Max remain in a state of uncertainty—still available and maintaining their premium status, yet lagging in terms of innovation. While fans may appreciate their design and integration, those anticipating the AirPods Max 2 will likely need to exercise patience. Apple seems to be focusing on products with broader market appeal, leaving its flagship over-ear headphones without a clear timeline for updates.
