Minister V. Somanna Inspects Redevelopment of Amritsar Railway Station

On October 8, 2025, Shri V. Somanna, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, conducted a thorough inspection of the redevelopment work at Amritsar Railway Station, which is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). The Chief Project Manager/Construction provided an update on the significant advancements in the transformation of the station, which serves as a gateway to the Golden Temple, Sri Harmandir Sahib, attracting approximately 100,000 visitors daily and showcasing the city’s cultural and spiritual significance. During the visit, Shri Somanna highlighted the Central Government’s dedication to enhancing the travel experience for the millions of pilgrims and tourists visiting Amritsar.

The Minister was presented with a detailed Scope of Work for the project, outlining an extensive expansion and modernization plan that includes: ensuring seamless movement for passengers with the installation of 15 escalators and 14 lifts across buildings and foot overbridges; creating a Divyangjan-friendly environment with access ramps, lifts, tactile flooring for visually impaired passengers, and suitable toilets; providing a spacious parking area with improved circulation towards the main entry and developing a new secondary entry with dedicated parking and circulation; and establishing a dedicated circulating area with separate drop-off and pick-up lanes to facilitate smooth traffic flow and passenger convenience.

Shri Somanna instructed railway officials to maintain a consistent pace of work while upholding the highest quality and safety standards, ensuring that construction activities minimally disrupt daily operations and passenger movement. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, announced by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, aims to enhance passenger experience, improve accessibility, and transform Indian Railways into a world-class travel infrastructure.
