Anthropic Plans to Launch in Bengaluru and Partner with Reliance

Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI research company known for the Claude chatbot, is gearing up for its official entry into India. Reports from TechCrunch indicate that the firm intends to open its first local office in Bengaluru, a significant move in its global expansion strategy. Co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei is currently in India to finalize plans for this new initiative. While in the country, Amodei is anticipated to meet Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, along with other senior executives in Mumbai to explore a potential strategic collaboration. Such a partnership could enhance the availability of Claude across India via Reliance’s extensive digital ecosystem, including its Jio platforms.

The increasing significance of India in the global AI arena seems to be a primary driver behind Anthropic’s decision to expand. With over a billion internet users, India is the second-largest online market, following China, and plays a crucial role in Claude’s global traffic, trailing only the United States, as per Similarweb data. Numerous Indian startups are already utilizing Anthropic’s models to create AI-driven solutions for clients worldwide. Amodei’s visit reportedly involves high-profile discussions in New Delhi with government officials and lawmakers, with sources suggesting a potential meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing Anthropic’s desire to establish a lasting presence in India’s rapidly progressing AI landscape.

By week’s end, Amodei is expected to head to Bengaluru to formally announce the opening of Anthropic’s India office on Thursday. He will be joined by Guillaume Princen, who oversees operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and Daniel Delaney, who manages startup partnerships. The leadership team will also connect with venture capital firms like Accel and Lightspeed, hosting discussions on how Indian startups and developers can incorporate Claude into their offerings. Unlike OpenAI, which has emphasized consumer engagement through affordable ChatGPT plans and is preparing to open an office in New Delhi, Anthropic’s focus in Bengaluru will be primarily on enterprise clients, developers, and startups.

The firm aims to bolster its B2B ecosystem and empower Indian businesses to create advanced applications using Claude AI models. Meanwhile, Reliance Industries is enhancing its own AI efforts. In August 2025, the conglomerate initiated Reliance Intelligence, a dedicated unit for developing AI infrastructure and enterprise solutions. This division is already collaborating with major global tech firms like Google and Meta, both of which have established connections with Reliance. Although the company previously considered a partnership with OpenAI earlier this year, those discussions stalled after CEO Sam Altman postponed his visit to India. Anthropic’s entry into India coincides with the growing local adoption of Claude.

Analytics firm Appfigures reports that the Claude app experienced a 48% year-on-year growth in September, reaching nearly 767,000 downloads, underlining the increasing demand for advanced AI tools in India. As Amodei’s visit progresses, all attention is directed towards Bengaluru, the center of India’s tech innovation, where Anthropic is set to establish a foundation for a long-term AI partnership with one of the country’s most influential business conglomerates.
