Apple Set to Launch First Foldable iPhone in 2026 with Innovative Features

Apple is gearing up to enter the foldable smartphone market, with reports suggesting that the company may reveal its first foldable iPhone in 2026. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, this model, referred to as V68, will represent a significant design evolution for Apple. The foldable iPhone is anticipated to feature a book-style design akin to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, unfolding into a compact tablet-sized display. Gurman notes that the device could include four cameras and reintroduce Touch ID instead of Face ID. Additionally, it is expected to eliminate the physical SIM slot in favor of eSIM technology.

Apple’s suppliers have reportedly commenced preliminary work on the foldable device, with mass production expected to start in early 2026. If development proceeds as planned, the phone might be launched during Apple’s traditional fall event. Currently, the company is said to be testing only black and white color options. The device is also projected to incorporate Apple’s forthcoming C2 modem chip, which would be its first in-house cellular modem. Designed to compete with Qualcomm’s top offerings, this modem is also likely to be used in the iPhone 18 Pro series. One of the primary concerns regarding foldable phones has been the visible crease on the display.

Initially, Apple considered using on-cell touch sensors; however, this approach risked introducing air gaps that would accentuate the crease. To address this issue, Apple has reportedly opted for in-cell touch technology, similar to that used in standard iPhones. This transition is expected to minimize crease visibility while improving touch performance, making the foldable iPhone more sophisticated than many competitors. Industry analysts, including JPMorgan’s Samik Chatterjee, predict that the foldable iPhone may feature a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. Although slightly smaller than Samsung’s offerings, Apple seems to be targeting a thinner profile, possibly measuring just 4.5mm when unfolded — among the slimmest in the market.

Camera arrangements may include one on the front, one inside the fold, and two on the back, catering to both selfies and high-quality photography. Instead of Face ID, Apple could utilize Touch ID, potentially integrated into the power button or side frame, to maintain a sleek design. The foldable iPhone is expected to launch in the ultra-premium market, with an estimated starting price around $1,999 (approximately ₹1.75 lakh in India). This pricing would place it above Apple’s Pro Max models, yet experts believe the combination of advanced design, new features, and Apple’s dedicated user base will drive strong demand despite the cost.

If these predictions are accurate, 2026 might see Apple redefine the foldable smartphone market with elegance, sophistication, and innovation that may challenge its competitors.
