Apple Pushes Back iPhone Fold Release to 2027 Due to Design Issues

Apple Pushes Back iPhone Fold Release to 2027 Due to Design Issues

Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone, the iPhone Fold, is now projected to launch in 2027, delayed by a year from earlier estimates. Reports suggest that this postponement is largely attributed to difficulties in finalizing the device’s hinge mechanism and overall design. Japanese investment firm Mizuho Securities states that Apple is still refining the Fold’s design and has not yet finalized specifications for several critical components, particularly the hinge.

The firm highlighted that initiating mass production of a foldable phone by the third quarter of 2026 would be problematic, noting, “It takes time to decide the final design and specification of Apple’s hinge.” Analysts warn that a 2026 launch could lead to production falling five to seven million units short of earlier predictions. The hinge, essential for foldable devices, must demonstrate durability and precision to endure thousands of folds without sacrificing functionality. Apple seems to be prioritizing reliability over speed to ensure the device aligns with its premium standards. Furthermore, the company is reportedly struggling to secure an adequate supply of display panels, which may further postpone production.

In spite of the delay, some specifications for the iPhone Fold have surfaced. The device is anticipated to feature an outer display measuring 5.38 inches diagonally and an inner display of 7.58 inches. These dimensions are slightly smaller than previous rumors, which indicated 5.49 inches externally and 7.76 inches internally. When folded, the iPhone Fold will resemble the now-discontinued iPhone mini, which had a 5.4-inch screen, while the inner display will represent the largest iPhone screen to date. To accommodate the dual-screen design, Apple is expected to utilize a custom A20 Pro chipset, optimized for multitasking, split-screen functionality, and energy efficiency.

Initial speculations also indicate that the Fold may contain a sizeable 5,000–5,500 mAh battery, which would exceed that of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, providing sufficient power for the larger display. Should the device launch alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in 2027, Apple might still manufacture fewer units than originally planned due to the complexities involved in foldable production. However, this delay allows Apple to ensure reliable performance, hinge durability, and premium build quality—essential aspects of the company’s first foray into the foldable market.

Rumors regarding an iPhone Fold have been circulating since at least 2018, with each new leak suggesting a release “one year away.” While fans may have had heightened expectations for a 2026 launch due to the volume of 2025 rumors, the latest report indicates that patience will be necessary. Despite the wait, excitement remains high. With its dual screens, powerful new chipset, and robust hinge, the iPhone Fold could represent Apple’s ambitious entry into foldable phones, combining compact portability with large-screen multitasking, all with the signature polish of the brand.
