Apple Reportedly Moving to OLED Displays for Upcoming iPads and MacBooks

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is set to introduce OLED displays in its iPad Air, iPad mini, and MacBook Air models. OLED technology provides enhanced contrast and deeper blacks compared to the current LCDs, making these devices more appealing for content creation and entertainment. However, the higher cost of OLED could result in increased prices for future models. Apple is currently testing various versions of each product equipped with OLED screens, as reported by sources familiar with the matter. Historically, Apple’s display technology has been limited to more premium devices. Presently, OLED screens are only available on the iPad Pro series and iPhones.

The company may aim to stimulate demand for its Mac and iPad lines by enticing consumers to upgrade through the OLED transition. The first device expected to feature this technology is the iPad mini, likely launching next year, with its OLED version, codenamed J510, potentially priced $100 higher due to the new display and enhanced waterproof design. Following this, the iPad Air and MacBook Air may adopt OLED screens, with projections for the MacBook Air to transition by 2028. Recently, analysts Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo forecasted an OLED touchscreen version of the MacBook Pro to be unveiled in 2026 or early 2027, despite Steve Jobs’ well-known aversion to touchscreens.

It remains uncertain whether the MacBook Air will also feature a touchscreen. An OLED MacBook Air would incorporate a touch screen, and besides improvements in black levels and contrast, OLED displays are lighter than LCDs as they do not require backlighting. A key drawback is their lower brightness levels.
