Zoho’s messaging platform Arattai is set to undergo a significant transformation with the implementation of mandatory end-to-end encryption (E2EE). Co-founder and Chief Scientist Sridhar Vembu announced this development, confirming that the new security model is currently in its final testing phase. The company plans to roll out compulsory encryption, initially focusing on one-to-one conversations, with group chats to follow shortly after confirming stability. Vembu described this upgrade as a major change that required extensive engineering efforts, ranking among the most complex enhancements Arattai has pursued. To facilitate a smooth transition, Zoho has engaged about 6,000 employees to test the new build, report issues, and validate fixes. Several bugs were identified during the initial testing round but were addressed promptly.
A new build is now undergoing another validation phase, and if everything proceeds as expected, the encryption system will be available to users within days. As the entire messaging infrastructure is being upgraded, this will be a mandatory update for all Arattai users. Vembu stated, “If all goes well, we plan to deploy in a few days. It will be a forced upgrade on all because it is a drastic change.” Although the updated app version is accessible for download from app stores, the encryption feature remains inactive until final testing is completed successfully. The necessary cryptographic framework has been integrated into the build and will be activated remotely once testing concludes.
Users can also anticipate performance enhancements, including a faster and more streamlined interface. The company has been open about the challenges faced during this process. In response to a user’s technical inquiry regarding changes at the protocol level, Vembu affirmed that the core encryption protocol remains stable. He elaborated on the issues encountered during the switch-over process and the challenges of transferring large files, particularly on Android devices. With the move to mandatory E2EE, Arattai aims to bolster its status as a secure communication platform amidst growing concerns about digital privacy. As the rollout approaches completion, users can look forward to a more secure and reliable messaging experience soon.
