Arif's Sarus being trained for life in the wild

Kanpur, May 19 (). The stork, who lived with Mohammad Arif of Amethi for over a year, is now being taught to adjust to the ways of the jungle at the Kanpur zoo. According to zoo officials, the stork is slowly shifting from cooked food to raw food. It is now being trained for rehabilitation in the wild.

Zoo director Krishan Kumar Singh said, the storks are gradually being trained to eat a raw diet more suitable for wild birds, instead of eating cooked food like maggi, dal, rice and khichdi.

Singh said that they have so far achieved 80 per cent success in acclimatising the storks to a suitable diet. Now he has started eating raw grains, insects, crustaceans, spinach, water hyacinth etc.

Since its arrival on March 25, the stork has been living in an enclosure.

The director of the zoo said, once the bird is fully recovered, it will be sent back to the wild.

The bird spent a year with Arif, so it will take more time to rehabilitate it in the wild, he said.

The stork is still preferring to live with humans rather than in the wild.

During his stay with Arif, the stork used to accompany him to the fields and was like a member of the family.

Last month, Arif had met the bird at the Kanpur zoo.

Arif has been pleading with the authorities to allow him to keep the stork, but his request has been turned down.
