Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) looking into the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg must submit its chargesheet by December 8, moving the deadline up by nine days. During a press conference in Guwahati, CM Sarma indicated that the investigation is nearing completion and that all necessary steps are being taken to facilitate the timely filing of the report. “The chargesheet in Zubeen’s case was originally due on December 17, but I have directed the SIT to finish it by December 8. We are fully prepared from all angles,” the Chief Minister stated.
He noted that the investigation had faced delays due to procedural requirements, as the incident occurred outside India, which requires prior approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) before filing the chargesheet. “Since the case involves events that transpired on foreign soil, MHA clearance is essential. I met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi yesterday to speed up the approval process,” he explained. CM Sarma also mentioned that the SIT plans to formally approach the MHA in the next three to four days, with the chargesheet anticipated to be lodged between December 7 and 10.
This announcement follows increasing public outcry and emotional appeals across Assam for justice for the beloved singer, who was a significant figure in the state’s music and film scene. Zubeen Garg’s premature death has led to widespread sorrow and speculation, with calls for transparency and accountability in the investigation coming from fans and opposition leaders. The SIT, established by the Assam government, is responsible for examining the details surrounding his death, which officials have described as a matter of “deep public sentiment.” CM Sarma reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to a comprehensive, fair, and unbiased investigation, promising that all efforts would be made to uncover the truth behind the incident.
