Kolkata, May 29 (). A West Bengal court on Monday rejected the West Bengal Police’s CID plea seeking the custody of Kurmi leaders Rajesh Mahto and Nishikant Mahto, arrested in connection with the attack on Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s convoy on Friday evening.
Though the public prosecutor filed a plea for 10 days police custody of the two leaders and seven others arrested in this connection, the court rejected the plea and instead sent them to judicial custody for 14 days.
Rajesh Mahato came out of the court and told media persons that a conspiracy was hatched against him to destabilize the peaceful movement of the Kurmi community. We are demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the matter, he said. We want justice. We have full faith in the legal and judicial system of the country.
He also alleged that the West Bengal government was conspiring to end the existence of the Kurmi people. That is why we are demanding a CBI inquiry to find out the conspiracy behind the attack on the convoy, he said. On Monday, the district court also asked the police to submit the case diary of the case within the next 12 days.
First Rajesh Mahto, a prominent face of the Kurmi movement and a government school teacher, was first transferred away from a native village and later arrested soon after the attack on Abhishek Banerjee’s convoy. Soon after, the police arrested his close aide Nishikant Mahato.
