New Delhi, April 23 (). The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Sunday expressed deep concern over the Supreme Court’s hearing on a plea seeking recognition of same-sex marriage by a Constitution bench.
The lawyers’ association emphasized that any involvement by the apex court in this matter would result in destabilizing the social fabric of the country in days to come. This would be disastrous for the concept of marriage.
A unanimous resolution was passed in a joint meeting of all the State Bar Councils along with the Bar Council of India, stating that it is advisable that the competent legislature, after a detailed consultation process involving various social and religious groups, Let it be dealt with.
The lawyers’ association emphasized that a matter having a far-reaching impact on our socio-cultural and religious beliefs must necessarily come through the legislative process.
It asked the Supreme Court to hear a batch of petitions to give legal recognition to same sex marriages respecting the sentiments and mandate of the people of the country.
The resolution states, “As per history, since the inception of human civilization and culture, marriage has been specifically accepted and classified as the union of biological male and female for the dual purpose of procreation and recreation.” . In such a background it can be disastrous, no matter how well intentioned.
It claimed that every responsible and prudent citizen of the country is worried about the future of their children after knowing about the pendency of the matter before the Supreme Court.
