Lucknow, April 23 (). Uttar Pradesh is increasing beer production by 15 to 20 per cent to meet the growing demand amid the scorching heat.
In the last financial year, the state consumed over 60 crore units of 500ml beer cans and officials are confident of a rise in demand this season.
The sixth beer brewing unit to be set up in Sonbhadra launched the domestic brand product earlier this month and will compete with existing brands.
The state’s first beer brewery was established in 1959, while the fifth one was established in August 2015.
Various domestic and international beer companies have introduced 162 different products (330-ml pint, 500-ml can and 650-ml bottle).
Of these, 15 are imported, while 96 brands being marketed in the state are bottled and manufactured at breweries in other states.
The remaining 51 brands are from six breweries in Uttar Pradesh.
Senior excise officials said beer sales would pick up between May and July.
Last year, many beer brands were not available in the market till mid-May, so we approached five breweries in the state to increase production, said a senior excise official. Four out of five want to increase their daily potential.
After the Sonbhadra unit, another beer brewery in the state is going to be commissioned in a few months at Barabanki.
