Kolkata, May 22 (). In West Bengal, the BJP has outlined a special two-pronged outreach program focusing only on the Bhawanipore assembly constituency in South Kolkata. This region is currently represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Political observers feel that this constituency-specific outreach program will be conducted by the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Shubhendu Adhikari is apparently trying to divert the attention of the Chief Minister towards overall administrative responsibilities and statewide political activities, so as to divert his attention from his own constituency.
According to a member of the BJP’s state committee, the first part of the strategy will be a campaign to publicize the development work done by the central government since 2014 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Special booklets will be issued and distributed among the voters of Bhawanipur, said a member of the state committee. The booklets will be printed in six different languages, Bengali, Hindi, English, Maithili, Gujarati and Gurmukhi, considering the cosmopolitan nature of the constituency.
The second part of the strategy would be to organize a community Durga Puja in the constituency this year, which would be sponsored by the state unit of the party.
He said, the biggest festival of West Bengal and Bengalis is an ideal time and opportunity for public relations programs and hence this year we will organize a community Durga Puja in Bhawanipore.
The result in Bhawanipore has been very volatile since 2014. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, this constituency gave a slight edge to the BJP candidate. However, in the 2016 assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee won with a huge margin of over 25,000 votes.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections again the lead margin of Trinamool Congress was reduced to less than 4,000 votes. However, the margin of victory of the ruling party from the same constituency increased to more than 55,000 votes in the 2021 assembly elections.
