The West Bengal government on Wednesday moved a division bench of the Calcutta High Court challenging a single-judge bench’s decision to set up a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the rape and murder of a minor girl at Kaliganj in Uttar Dinajpur district. ) has been ordered to be formed.
It is learned that the state government challenged the order of the single judge bench on the ground that two retired police officers have been included as members in the three-member SIT.
On May 11, expressing disappointment over the slow progress of the investigation by the state police in the case, a division bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha ordered the formation of the SIT comprising Special Commissioner of Kolkata Police Damayanti Sen, retired IG Pankaj Dutta and retired Joint Director of CBI Upen Biswas. ordered.
The Trinamool Congress leadership objected to the formation of the SIT. Especially on the inclusion of Dutta as a member, as he has been quite vocal in various news channels on several issues against the state government in the recent past.
The state government decided to move a division bench to challenge Justice Mantha’s order. Justice Mantha also authorized the SIT to conduct a second post-mortem on the victim’s body if the team members consider it necessary.
He also directed the state police to hand over all the documents related to the case, including the case diary, to the SIT at the earliest. The police have also been directed to submit the preliminary investigation report in the matter before the next date of hearing.
Parts of Kaliaganj had turned into a battlefield following violent protests by locals against the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl on April 25.
The relatives of the victim allege that the police immediately removed the body with the intention of destroying the evidence. Four ASIs were suspended after they were seen dragging the body of the teenager.
