Bihar Braces for Intensified Cold Weather and Dense Fog

Patna: The temporary relief from winter’s chill in Bihar is coming to an end, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a fresh decline in night temperatures starting Sunday. The recent moderation in cold conditions was attributed to a slowdown in westerly winds, but the weather agency warns that this respite will be brief. Most districts are forecasted to see minimum temperatures drop by 2–4°C, with several cities likely to experience nighttime temperatures below 10°C. However, daytime temperatures are expected to remain largely stable throughout the week. Dry conditions are anticipated, along with light to moderate fog in the mornings, which may affect visibility.

The IMD and the Bihar Mausam Seva Kendra have issued a fog alert for the next 48 hours, cautioning about extremely low visibility during late-night and early-morning hours. Districts under alert include Patna, Gaya, Aurangabad, Bhojpur, Buxar, Nalanda, and parts of East and West Champaran. On Saturday morning, a thick layer of fog covered significant areas of the state, reducing visibility to as low as 10–20 meters in certain locations. While skies are expected to clear somewhat by the afternoon, authorities have advised caution during early hours. Daytime temperatures are projected to be between 26°C and 32°C, with nighttime temperatures ranging from 12°C to 18°C.

Light westerly winds of around 20–25 km/h will persist, maintaining dry conditions while also contributing to fog formation due to high humidity. According to the latest IMD forecast, the upcoming week will see a combination of fog and mild cold across Bihar. In southern Bihar, daytime temperatures are likely to range from 26°C to 28°C, while northern and central districts may witness slight increases to 28–30°C. Most areas will experience nighttime temperatures between 14–16°C, with slightly cooler conditions of around 12–14°C expected in the southwest and south-central regions. Experts have warned that air quality may deteriorate under the persistent fog and haze, advising individuals with asthma or respiratory issues to wear masks outdoors.
