Chandigarh Police Establish SIT to Examine Death of IPS Officer Y Puran Kumar

The Chandigarh Police have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the death of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who reportedly died by suicide on October 7. This SIT, led by Inspector General Pushpender Kumar, was formed under the guidance of Chandigarh Police chief Sagar Preet Hooda to guarantee a comprehensive and unbiased investigation. This action comes after the registration of an FIR on Thursday, which contains allegations of abetment to suicide and provisions from the SC/ST Act. The FIR was prompted by a final note left by the officer, which identifies Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, and nine other current and former officials for alleged harassment and defamation.

In the meantime, Puran Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, has requested that authorities revise the FIR to accurately identify all suspects and reinforce the SC/ST Act provisions that she asserts were weakened. The officer’s family has also denied permission for the post-mortem examination until their requests are addressed. The 52-year-old Dalit officer was discovered deceased in the basement of his residence in Chandigarh’s Sector 11. The SIT, which comprises senior police officials including SSP Kanwardeep Kaur and SP (City) KM Priyanka, has been assigned to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and submit a report in a timely manner, although no specific deadline has been established.

DGP Hooda stressed the importance of a “prompt, impartial, and thorough” investigation, permitting the SIT to incorporate additional officers or experts as necessary.
