Bareilly, May 17 (). In an effort to crack down on members of the Atiq Ahmed gang, the Bareilly police have filed a charge sheet against nine people, including two jail guards and Mohammad Raza, a close aide of the slain gangster, in the case for secret meetings of jailed Ashraf Ahmed.
On March 8, the Bareilly police unit had exposed the nexus of criminals and prison personnel at the Bareilly District Jail, where Ashraf, the younger brother of Atiq Ahmed, was lodged since July 2020.
The police had arrested jail canteen supplier Daya Ram, Bareilly District Jail Warden Shiv Hari Awasthi and Pilibhit Jail Warden Manoj Gaur for conducting secret meetings of Ashraf inside the jail.
Later seven more people including Lalla Gaddi were arrested in this case.
During the investigation of the Umesh Pal murder case, it was revealed that four of the six attackers, Guddu Muslim, Atiq’s son Asad, Sabir and Ghulam were involved in the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal and his two police guards in Prayagraj. He had gone to Bareilly jail to meet Ashraf two weeks before Umesh Pal’s murder on February 24.
This revelation has confirmed Ashraf’s involvement behind Umesh Pal’s murder.
Bareilly SSP Prabhakar Chowdhary confirmed that a charge sheet has been filed against nine people. This includes two jail guards, canteen supplier Daya Ram, Lalla Gaddi, Rashid Ali, Furqan Nabi Khan, Mohammad Sarfuddin, Farhat Guddu and Arif.
Another police officer said that jail guard Shiv Hari Awasthi had arranged Ashraf’s meeting with his associates without mentioning it in the jail records.
He said that Awasthi used to put up an ID at least thrice a week for the entry of six-seven people at a time. The SIT, headed by a CO rank officer, probed the matter and filed a chargesheet, he said.
He said Ashraf’s name was not included in the chargesheet as he was shot dead along with Ateeq by three assailants on April 15 in police custody in Prayagraj while being taken to a hospital for medical examination.
