OpenAI’s budget-friendly ChatGPT Go plan has greatly influenced the Indian market, effectively increasing subscriber numbers within a month of its launch. ChatGPT head Nick Turley disclosed that the total number of ChatGPT subscribers has more than doubled since the plan’s introduction in India on August 19. Offered at a monthly fee of Rs 399, ChatGPT Go aims to enhance AI accessibility for a wider audience in growing markets. The plan grants users increased access to messaging, image generation, and file uploads, along with significantly improved memory retention. These upgraded features enable the chatbot to provide more tailored interactions over time, making it appealing for regular users.
India has become a crucial market for OpenAI, now ranking as the second-largest in active ChatGPT users, trailing only the United States. The success of ChatGPT Go highlights the need for affordable AI solutions in the nation. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also announced the establishment of the company’s first office in India by the end of this year and is expected to visit soon, reflecting OpenAI’s dedication to the region. After the success in India, OpenAI has now introduced ChatGPT Go in Indonesia, marking it as the second country to receive this plan. The subscription in Indonesia is set at 75,000 Rupiah per month, roughly equivalent to Rs 399, maintaining consistent pricing across both markets.
Turley emphasized that Indonesia ranks among ChatGPT’s top five markets by weekly active users, suggesting strong potential for adoption. ChatGPT Go is tailored to meet the needs of emerging markets by providing users with ten times higher limits for messaging, image generation, and file uploads compared to free accounts. This enhanced access allows users to engage more comprehensively with the AI, making it suitable for both personal and professional applications. OpenAI’s initiative comes at a time of increasing competition in the AI sector. Google has recently launched its AI Plus plan in Indonesia, which offers expanded access to tools like Gemini 2.5 Pro, video creation with Veo 3 Fast, NotebookLM, and Gemini integration across Google applications.
Google AI Plus also provides 200GB of Google One storage and is priced at 75,000 Rupiah, with a 50 percent discount for early users for six months. With both ChatGPT Go and Google AI Plus targeting affordability and enhanced features in developing markets, users now have various options to explore AI capabilities at a reduced cost. OpenAI’s emphasis on accessibility and personalized experiences through ChatGPT Go has evidently resonated with Indian users, and its launch in Indonesia signifies a strategic expansion in the region.
