Patna: OpenAI’s recent update has introduced Group Chats for ChatGPT users in India, providing a shared environment for up to 20 individuals to plan, discuss, or collaborate with the assistance of AI. Initially launched in select countries on November 14, this feature is now available globally in both the ChatGPT app and web version. Testing has shown that the feature integrates smoothly once the app is updated. Desktop users will also observe a new ‘Get Together’ button on the web interface for quick group creation. Once a group is established, users can share an invite link through WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, or any other platform. Notably, the AI has been upgraded to understand when to engage and when to remain silent.
OpenAI states that ChatGPT can now interpret the dynamics of group conversations, responding only when pertinent. It differentiates between messages that need AI input and those that do not, marking a significant improvement over previous models where AI responses could seem intrusive. “ChatGPT knows when to listen, when to respond and when to back off,” the company highlights. Users can create a group by following simple steps: updating the ChatGPT app or accessing the web version, tapping the People icon in the top-right corner, selecting Start Group Chat to establish a new room, and sharing the Invite with Link option to add members through any platform. Users can customize the group’s name, photo, and username as desired.
Inside ChatGPT Groups, tapping the profile icon provides access to various controls: view all members, add new participants, copy, reset or delete invite links, add manual instructions or customize response behavior, and choose response options such as automatically based on context or only when mentioned. Users can also mute notifications, report, leave, or delete the group. These settings grant users considerable flexibility, particularly for work and project groups. OpenAI has confirmed that personal memories from private chats do not transfer to group chats, and the AI will not form new long-term memories within groups, ensuring user privacy. The feature operates on the GPT-5.1 Auto model, which dynamically selects the most appropriate version depending on the query.
The Group Chat tool is designed to assist with travel planning, family coordination, team meetings, event preparation, dinner or outing plans, and college or project discussions.
