Chandigarh: The Congress party on Thursday requested a fair investigation into the suspected suicide of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who was discovered with a gunshot wound in his residence. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the Leader of Opposition, emphasized that no wrongdoer should escape accountability and no innocent individual should suffer ramifications. He asserted that it is the obligation of the state government to deliver justice in this situation, noting that the suicide of such a high-ranking police officer is a tragic occurrence. “This incident has shaken the entire state. If such a senior police officer is not safe today, one can imagine the plight of ordinary citizens,” the former chief minister remarked in a statement.
Y Puran Kumar, a 52-year-old officer from the 2001 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS), was found with a gunshot wound in a basement room of his Sector 11 home on Tuesday. Sources indicate that Kumar allegedly left a note naming several “senior officers” and detailing the “mental harassment” and “humiliation” he endured over the years. Congress MP Kumari Selja described the suicide of a Dalit IPS officer in Haryana as an exceedingly tragic, alarming, and deeply distressing issue. She asserted that a thorough, independent, and high-level inquiry into the entire situation is crucial to ensure that strict action is taken against those responsible.
“This is not merely a personal tragedy but a horrifying glimpse into the institutional insensitivity and caste-based discrimination that has been continuously deepening under the BJP rule,” Selja posted on X in Hindi. “Since 2020, enduring constant casteist insults, mental harassment, and injustice, an officer ultimately had to lose his life — this highlights the administrative failure of the BJP government and its indifference toward social justice,” she added.
