Chennai, May 17 (). With the death toll in the spurious liquor tragedy in Tamil Nadu reaching 22 and around 55 people hospitalised, the opposition parties are gunning down the DMK government.
A group of over 50 people consumed illicit liquor at Ekkiyarkuppam, a fishermen’s hamlet in Markakan in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district on Saturday. Many of them later complained of nausea, vomiting, itching in the body and loss of vision. Six people had lost their lives till Saturday night.
Meanwhile, at Maduranthakam in Chengalpattu district, 50 km from Marakkanam, several people complained of breathlessness, vomiting and nausea after consuming the decoction. Around six people lost their lives in Madhuranthakam on Saturday night and till Sunday.
Till Wednesday morning, 22 people have lost their lives in one of Tamil Nadu’s worst liquor tragedies. Around 55 people from both Marakkanam and Maruthanthakam are in hospitals and many have complained of loss of vision.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has already issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government on the hooch tragedy.
Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and state Excise and Prohibition Minister Senthil Balaji for the deaths caused by spurious liquor.
The BJP has also called upon the Chief Minister to take strict action against those supplying industrial liquor to make adulterated liquor.
Opposition parties are planning to launch a massive campaign across Tamil Nadu against the alleged involvement of local DMK leaders in the purchase and distribution of illegal liquor and illicit liquor, which led to the death of 22 people.
