The cloudburst in Dehradun’s Sahastradhara area has left two individuals missing and caused significant damage to various shops, hotels, and commercial properties between Monday night and Tuesday morning. District administration officials reported that residents were evacuated overnight, and they believe those missing are safe while ongoing efforts are made to locate them. Rishabh Kumar, the district disaster management officer, stated, “Roads have been blocked but we are sending our teams there to find out what the locals are saying. They are saying there was a cloudburst in Sahastradhara Dehradun. We are also checking out the details of that. We have had several houses getting damaged, some shops swept away.
But no death or loss of life so far has been reported.” In the city’s main market, Badli Chowk, heavy debris was observed, with damage to several buildings and two small hotels. The SDRF and fire department teams faced challenges reaching the worst-hit areas due to blocked roads. Residents in the state have been advised to remain vigilant, especially those living near riverbanks, as the Tamsa, Tons, and Song rivers are flowing above the danger mark. The Maldevta approach bridge was washed away, isolating the area. Significant damage occurred at the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, where debris covered most of the temple complex, and various items were swept away.
Schools in Dehradun were closed for the day, and a red alert was issued until 9 a.m. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah communicated with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, assuring him of comprehensive central assistance, emphasizing that the Union Government stands with Uttarakhand during this difficult period.
