Delhi Ashram Director Accused of Sexual Harassment by Students

In New Delhi, a prominent ashram director is facing accusations of sexually harassing several female students, according to police reports. Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati, also known as Partha Sarathy, who heads the Sri Sharda Institute of Indian Management, is under investigation for alleged misconduct toward students enrolled in post-graduate management diploma programs intended for those from economically weaker sections. At least 17 of the 32 students who provided statements to authorities have accused him of using inappropriate language, sending obscene text messages, and engaging in unwanted physical contact. Victims have also claimed that some staff members at the ashram pressured them to acquiesce to the accused’s demands.

The students reported that certain wardens had initially introduced them to Swami Chaitanyananda, who would summon them to his room under the pretense of offering free trips abroad, as evidenced by explicit messages exchanged with them. Following these allegations, police have initiated a case against him for sexual harassment and related offenses, as stated by Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Goyal. Investigations have included the review of CCTV footage and raids at both the crime scene and the suspect’s residence, but he remains at large, with reports indicating he was last seen near Agra. Multiple police teams are actively searching for him. The National Commission for Women has taken notice of the case.

During the inquiry, police discovered a Volvo car in the ashram’s basement, utilized by Swami Chaitanyananda, which was found to be displaying a forged diplomatic license plate and has since been confiscated. In response to the allegations, the ashram’s administration has dismissed him from his position and expelled him from the institution. This ashram is affiliated with a major facility based in South India, namely the Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetha, Sringeri, which has condemned Swami Chaitanyananda’s actions as illegal and contrary to their values.
