Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that her administration will seek the Supreme Court’s approval for the use of green firecrackers during Diwali. She highlighted the festival’s cultural and religious significance, noting that the decision reflects the sentiments of millions of residents in Delhi. Gupta specified that only authorized and certified green firecrackers would be allowed, ensuring adherence to environmental standards and government regulations. Previously, the Supreme Court had granted permission for certified manufacturers to produce green firecrackers under stringent conditions, prohibiting their sale in Delhi-NCR without prior approval. The court, under Chief Justice B. R. Gavai, also instructed the Centre to reconsider the complete ban on firecracker manufacturing in the area.
Certified manufacturers from NEERI and PESO were permitted to continue production, provided they agreed not to sell in restricted zones until further notice. The issue will be reassessed on October 8 after receiving a report from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
