The number of vehicles per 1,000 residents in Delhi decreased from 530 in 2015-16 to 373 in 2023-24, while road accidents also fell from 8,085 in 2015 to 5,560 in 2022, according to a government report. The Delhi State Framework Indicator report on sustainable development goals, recently released by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, indicates that the fleet of DTC and cluster buses grew from 5,842 in 2015-16 to 7,485 in 2023-24. Despite this, the daily average ridership dropped from 4.59 million to 4.24 million over the same period. In contrast, daily average ridership on the Delhi Metro surged from 2.62 million in 2015-16 to 5.78 million in 2023-24.
The report also states that access to public transport for the population was 42.95% in 2015-16, which fell to 40.80% in 2022-23, but improved to 45.83% in 2023-24. Looking ahead, the report aims for the government to ensure safe, affordable, accessible, and sustainable transport systems for everyone by 2030, focusing on road safety and public transport expansion, particularly for vulnerable groups including women, children, persons with disabilities, and the elderly. From 530 in 2015-16, the number of vehicles per 1,000 population decreased to 370 in 2022-23, with a slight rise to 373 in 2023-24. The report also highlights that road accidents were at 8,085 in 2015, dropping to 4,720 in 2021 and rising to 5,560 in 2022.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, fatalities and injuries from road accidents were 9,880 in 2015, decreasing to 5,228 in 2021 and increasing to 6,174 in 2022.
