The Vice President was the chief guest at the 70th Annual Convocation of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
During the ceremony, the Vice President, who is also the Chancellor of Panjab University, honored eminent educationist and philanthropist, Dr. Sudha N. Murthy with Honoris Causa (Doctor of Literature) and former Chief Justice of India and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Ranjan Gogoi with Honoris Causa (Doctor of Law).
Addressing the gathering, the Vice President reminded the students of their responsibility to contribute to the larger good of the society and work for the betterment of all.

Describing the National Education Policy 2020 as a game changer, the Vice President said that the policy, developed after consultation with all sections, is transforming education at all levels.
He said systemic reforms and positive governance measures in recent years have paid rich dividends and India, the largest functioning democracy, is a favorite global destination of opportunity and investment and a shining star in world economic growth.
Speaking on the digital transformation of India, the Vice President referred to the IMF’s recognition of India’s digital development as a world-class digital public infrastructure that can serve as a model for other countries undergoing digital transformation. doing.
He also mentioned direct benefit transfers through PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, Mudra Yojana etc. as a reflection of India’s changing governance model, which leaves no scope for evasion.
The Vice President said that the convocation is being organized under the leadership of Professor Renu Vig, the first woman Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University.
He appreciated that Panjab University is home to some of the most illustrious alumni and called for catalyzing further growth of the university.
He commended the University for always pursuing excellence in view of the various MoUs signed with foreign universities and its participation in international projects like High Energy Research Programme.
During his visit, the Vice President held separate meetings with Senate members, Syndicate members, Students Union, Teachers Union and Non-Teachers Union of Panjab University.
Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Prakash, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
