Guwahati, May 7 (). A doctor couple in Guwahati has been arrested by the police for physically abusing a 4-year-old girl. The couple had reportedly adopted the girl child. Officials gave this information on Sunday.
Sangeeta Baruah, a psychiatrist, was arrested by the police on Saturday night in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district, where she was hiding to avoid arrest. At the same time, the police arrested her husband Waliyul Islam from their house located in Manipuri Basti area of the city. Islam is a Gastrointestinal and Advanced General Surgeon.
The police have also arrested her maid Lakshmi for her alleged involvement in the case of abusing a minor.
The incident came to light when a neighbor of the doctor couple approached the police on Friday with a photograph of the minor girl tied to a pillar on the terrace in the scorching heat.
Miguel das Queh, a child rights activist, said there had been complaints in the past about the doctor couple mistreating their adopted daughter. Although, there was no evidence during that time, but later the evidence was found by the neighbor.
A police officer said that according to preliminary enquiry, Baruah thrashed the minor with a hot iron rod and also poured hot water on his body.
According to the police, the maid confessed during interrogation that she was asked to tie the minor to the terrace as a punishment as she was disobedient and used to mischief. The police is probing the matter.
Meanwhile, the doctor couple has been booked under sections of attempt to murder (307), voluntarily causing grievous hurt (325) and other relevant sections.
