In a significant update regarding the Durgapur medical student incident, the West Bengal Police have stated that no gangrape occurred, contradicting earlier reports. A 23-year-old classmate of the survivor has been arrested following the revelation of conflicting statements and security footage. Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Choudhary indicated that the friend, who is from Malda, is under suspicion, with current evidence suggesting his sole involvement. Previously, five villagers were detained on charges related to gangrape, but further investigations and medical reports have invalidated those allegations. Authorities observed various inconsistencies between the survivor’s initial and later statements, as well as contradictions in the accounts provided by her and her friend.
CCTV footage reportedly captured the woman returning to the campus in a calm manner, without any visible signs of distress, leading investigators to question the gangrape narrative. The five individuals initially named—Sheikh Safiqul, Sheikh Nasiruddin, Apu Bauri, Firdous Sheikh, and Sheikh Riazuddin—were interrogated as part of the investigation, but police now contend that only one person seems to be involved. The inquiry is still ongoing.
