Patna, April 17 (). The death toll in the East Champaran liquor tragedy has reached 37. The Bihar Police on Monday said that it has arrested 128 people involved in the illegal trade of liquor in the district.
ADGP (CID) Jitendra Kumar said that 5 FIRs have been registered in connection with the tragedy and 25 accused have been arrested, as well as 103 people involved in illegal liquor trade.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the victims died due to consumption of liquid containing methyl alcohol,” he said. It was brought in as a spirit from other states. However, the actual cause of death will be known after the viscera report.
ADGP said, we have launched an operation and seized 917 liters of country liquor and 10 liters of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL). We have also suspended two SHOs of Areraj and Sadar units and SHOs of Turkaulia, Sugauli, Paharpur, Harsiddhi and one more place.
The spurious liquor tragedy took place on April 14-15 and has claimed 37 lives so far.
We have started door to door campaign under the supervision of SP of East Champaran district and rescued the sick people, Kumar said. 25 people have been admitted to government hospitals and 10 people have been admitted to private hospitals. Besides this, 15 people have been admitted to Sadar Hospital Motihari.
