Barmer/Siwana. After the innovations in farming in Western Rajasthan, farmers are taking increasing interest in horticulture in the last four-five years. Seeing the farmers becoming prosperous due to good yield in horticulture farming, most of the farmers are engaged in pomegranate cultivation. The land of Dhor, which was considered a boon for pomegranates, is now flourishing with pomegranate plantations.
After spraying the pomegranate crops standing in agricultural wells and fields in the month of June-July, the crop is now ripe and ready, due to which the farmers have started collecting the crops. At the same time, farmers have also started getting good prices. Due to this, traders from big markets including Jeevana are camping in villages including Padru, Jagsa, Budiwada, Kankhi, Kundal, Indrana.
These days, the faces of farmers are also happy as the price of good quality pomegranate has reached Rs 70 to Rs 120. More horticulture gardens have been planted in the Siwana subdivision area of Balotra district in the last four-five years.
In the initial phase, only a few farmers showed interest in pomegranate cultivation due to high expenditure and doubt in the production, but due to the sandy land of Dhor and the suitable water here, the farmers gradually became prosperous due to the bumper yield in one or two years. -Slowly all the farmers have started taking interest in it.
As a result, today pomegranate is being cultivated on a large scale in every village of Siwana subdivision area. After planting a crop, farmers are getting good income if the same plant produces produce for three to four years. Half month of November and December is the time to collect fruits from ready crops, hence now farmers are engaged in harvesting the fruits by their families and outside workers.
Niharika Times correspondent reached the pomegranate gardens in the dhors in Kalan Sarai of Padru area on Friday. Where workers were seen unloading pomegranate fruits. There he talked to workers and farmers about the current season.
Due to demand in the markets, traders are directly reaching the farmers’ fields. The prices are also good according to the quality. Pomegranates weighing above 300 grams are being sold for Rs 100-120 per kg and fruits weighing less than this are being sold for Rs 60-70. As the crops ripen, farmer families have started collecting them.
These days, traders are coming into the field of horticulture and they are making deals with the farmers by quoting the price as per the price of pomegranate. At the same time, along with the traders, the work of external workers coming and plucking pomegranate fruits from the fields is also going on.– Bhagirath Ram Vishnoi
