Goa government strongly presented its stand on diversion of water from Mhadei: Sawant

[ad_1]
Panaji, March 30 (). Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said that his government has strongly presented its case on the Mhadei river issue before the Regional Authority Committee (Forest) in Bengaluru and New Delhi.

Sawant said during the budget speech in the assembly on Wednesday that the Mhadei water dispute was one of the biggest issues before him after becoming the chief minister. He said, the tribunal had ruled to give 3.9 TMC water from the basin. I immediately took steps to appeal against this decision to the Supreme Court.

The Chief Minister said that we strongly presented our stand before the Regional Authority Committee (Forest) in Bengaluru and in New Delhi and said that forest clearance should not be given in this matter. The Chief Wildlife Warden of Goa has issued a notice ordering Karnataka to stop all related activities.

“So far, orders have come in our favor from the Supreme Court and there has been a ban on taking Karnataka’s water without permission under environmental laws,” he said.

Sawant said that the government has effectively stopped construction work and water transfer from Mhadei. “Our government is closely monitoring the developments in Karnataka and the issues pending before various central authorities,” he said.

He said that the all-party delegation met the Union Ministers in New Delhi and presented its stand for the protection of Mhadei. Sawant said, a committee of the house has also been formed. The help of experts from environment, forest and hydrology is being taken. All the departments of the government are working together.

We are confident that we will take all measures to prevent damage/inundation, said the Chief Minister. We have been successful in presenting our case for the formation of Mhadei Water Management Authority (Pravah). This will help in checking illegal withdrawal of water by Karnataka.
