Google is set to enhance its smart home lineup significantly. During the recent Made by Google event, a Gemini-powered speaker was briefly showcased, generating interest. Reports from Android Headlines indicate that this device is confirmed and will introduce new features, colors, and enhanced integration with Google’s ecosystem. The forthcoming Gemini smart speaker is expected to be available in four colors: bright red, light green, black, and white. In contrast to earlier models, it will sport a fabric finish and a glowing light ring at the base, presenting a modernized look. A key feature may be its capability to connect with a Google TV Streamer for spatial audio during TV viewing, similar to Apple’s HomePods that work seamlessly with Apple TV.
This may also include support for televisions running on Google TV OS, enhancing the entertainment experience. The speaker is said to offer natural voice options, full compatibility with Matter, and the ability to detect unusual sounds, such as smoke alarms or breaking glass, making it a valuable smart assistant and home safety device. These functions will be powered by Google’s Gemini AI rather than Google Assistant. As previously announced, Gemini for Home will begin to be available for existing Nest speakers and displays starting in October, including support for Gemini Live and a potential subscription option. Although the exact release date for the new speaker is not yet known, a launch in the fall alongside Gemini for Home appears probable.
With no updates to the Nest Hub series since 2021, Google might also be working on an updated smart display to compete with Amazon’s latest Alexa offerings. This new Gemini-powered speaker underscores Google’s commitment to updating its smart home ecosystem with cutting-edge AI features.
