Google Pixel 10 First to Enable WhatsApp Calls via Satellite

Google has officially launched the Pixel 10 series, which includes several premium features, notably the ability to make WhatsApp voice and video calls over satellite networks. This means that users can place WhatsApp calls even in areas lacking mobile or Wi-Fi connectivity. The feature aims to facilitate communication in remote or emergency circumstances. According to Google’s announcement on X (formerly Twitter), this capability will be available starting August 28, coinciding with the Pixel 10 series’ official launch. A video teaser from the company illustrates how the functionality operates; when a WhatsApp call comes through via satellite, a satellite icon will appear in the status bar. However, there are specific conditions to consider.

Google has indicated that WhatsApp satellite calls will only function with selected carriers, and additional charges may apply when using this feature. It remains uncertain if the service will also cover WhatsApp text messaging or if it will be limited solely to voice and video calls. This advancement positions Google ahead of competitors such as Apple, which, while offering satellite connectivity, restricts its use to emergency text messaging only. By enabling WhatsApp calls over satellite, Google provides users with a more practical way to stay connected, whether reaching out to loved ones or contacting emergency services. Additionally, Google is extending this technology to wearables; the Pixel Watch 4 LTE model will be the first smartwatch to feature direct satellite connectivity.

Equipped with the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip, the smartwatch can connect to geostationary satellites, allowing users to send urgent help messages without relying on mobile networks. Overall, the introduction of WhatsApp voice and video calls over satellite marks a significant advancement in mobile communication technology. Although pricing details for this feature are still unclear, it enhances the Pixel 10’s reputation as a leading-edge smartphone for 2025. If successful, this innovation could transform how individuals maintain connections when completely off the grid.
