Bengaluru, May 21 (). Heavy rains in Bengaluru claimed the life of a woman software engineer on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Bhanurekha, working in Infosys. The incident took place due to water-logging in the underpass of KR Circle in the Central Business District of Bangalore. Water also filled the car, due to which Bhanurekha suffocated.
Bhanurekha was taken to the hospital, where Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, on learning of medical negligence, visited the hospital and ordered an inquiry into the complaints.
The Chief Minister also held an emergency meeting with the Bengaluru Police Commissioner and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner and directed them to take precautions.
According to the police, Bhanurekha was traveling in a car with her family when the vehicle got stuck in the water that had accumulated in the underpass. Bhanurekha started suffocating due to water entering the vehicle. She fainted. She was taken to St. Martha’s Hospital, but reportedly the staff did not start her treatment immediately.
Siddaramaiah spoke to Bhanurekha’s family.
He was told, Bhanurekha was from Vijayawada. He had called his family to Bangalore. Due to sudden heavy rain, the underpass was filled with water. He died due to delay in treatment.
Allegations of medical negligence will be probed, Siddaramaiah said. The hospital authorities are claiming that they have not committed any negligence. If their negligence is found, action will be taken against them.
The government has given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased. He said that the family members who fall sick would be given free treatment.
Former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said the new Congress government should instruct BBMP officials to take precautionary measures to prevent such tragedies.
