New Delhi, 20 Sep 25: In support of the Government of India’s flagship initiative ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ and the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s appeal for nationwide cleanliness through “Swachhta Hi Seva” (SHS), the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) effectively organized International Coastal Cleanup Day 2025 (ICC-2025) across all Coastal States and Union Territories on 20 Sep 25. Celebrated globally on the third Saturday of September under the guidance of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), International Coastal Cleanup Day aims to tackle marine pollution through widespread community involvement. The ICG has served as the national coordinator for this crucial initiative since 2006, consistently promoting public awareness and environmental responsibility.
Across the nation, a total of 26,092 volunteers took part in the ICC-2025 campaign. Numerous government and civil organizations joined in the campaign with enthusiasm and a sense of pride in cleaning our beaches. The significant participation from eager NCC cadets, NSS, and students from schools and colleges highlighted the awareness among the younger generation and their dedication to maintaining clean beaches. Participants engaged in extensive beach cleanup activities, clearing litter and marine debris to restore coastal health. In addition to physical cleaning, the event emphasized educating citizens about the harmful impacts of marine pollution and the necessity for sustainable practices to safeguard delicate marine ecosystems.
Praising the collaborative efforts, the ICG recognized the enthusiasm and dedication of all participants whose efforts made ICC-2025 a resounding success. The event reinforced a shared commitment to protecting India’s coastline of over 11,000 km and furthering the objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The ICG continues to encourage citizens to embrace eco-friendly practices and participate actively in environmental conservation efforts, ensuring a cleaner, safer, and sustainable marine environment for future generations.
