This year, Kanchan Bazaar puja mandap in Dhenkanal is adorned for its platinum jubilee celebration during Laxmi puja. The festivities include engaging performances and themed activities, with participation from both Hindu and Muslim communities, fostering social harmony. The Kanchan Bazaar Puja Committee has incorporated 60 kg of silver into the medha (backdrop) of the deity, enhancing its visual appeal. The ‘Chandi Medha’ or silver filigree tableau highlights the craftsmanship of local artisans and has attracted large crowds. The facial features of goddess Laxmi have remained consistent over the years, with the goddess this year adorned with 3 kg of gold and 150 kg of silver.

Sagir Mohammad, the puja committee secretary, noted that Laxmi puja serves as a bridge for social harmony between the Hindu and Muslim communities in the town. The tradition of Laxmi puja in Dhenkanal dates back to 1923, initiated by Lt Brajakishore Pattnaik and others at Kunja Sahoo Chhak, now known as Ganesh Bazaar. After encountering challenges, the celebration was revitalized in 1943 when Natabar Debata and Santan Sahoo relocated it to Majhigarh, now called Meena Bazaar. This year, for the first time, the Chief Minister announced Rs 50,000 for each bazaar, recognizing the culture and tradition of Laxmi puja in Dhenkanal, according to social activist Gopal Patra. Dhenkanal MP Rudra Narayan Pany emphasized that the festival emphasizes communal harmony.
