Bangalore, May 25 (). Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge has said that the amendments made to the textbooks by the previous government in the state were wrong. He questioned why children should read distorted history.
Kharge said this in New Delhi on Thursday.
Kharge said, why should we make our children study distorted history in textbooks? Any law that raises concerns on the education of our children will be changed. We are clear on this issue.
Last year, a committee headed by Rohit Chakratheertha removed the glorifying parts of Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore, and added a speech by Hedgewar to class 10 students in Karnataka. The then Education Minister B.C. Nagesh had defended the move despite strong opposition.
Meanwhile, a demand has been made to remove a text written by Hindutva ideologue Chakraborty Sulibele. The previous BJP government had added it to the syllabus under the title Tai Bhartiya Amarputraru.
Last week activist and senior educationist Dr. V.P. Niranjanaradhya met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and presented a proposal in this regard. He had told the CM that there was no need to inculcate saffron ideology for the children.
Niranjanaradhya also said that the Textbook Revision Committee constituted by the previous government under the chairmanship of Rohit Chakrateerth has saffronised the syllabus and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Basavanna, Kuvempu, Tipu Sultan have been insulted.
They demanded that since the textbooks have already been published, this year the students should not be taught the text on Hedgewar written by Chakraborty Sulibele and other objectionable material. There has also been a demand to review the textbooks again from next year.
